When a story isn’t ready yet

JP Frary on being challenged, sitting with discomfort, and letting a story take shape.

I asked JP Frary to tell a story he’d never told before—one that might be a little more dark or sad than his usual—and this is him, alone in his workshop, talking through what that process has been like.

JP Frary: I’ve got the whole shop to myself today.

I’m supposed to be working on this chair,

this dining chair that I’ve been trying to design for five years, and I finally

decided to just make.

But I hate the first version, and it’ll probably be the third or the fourth version

before I find the chair.

So I’m really working on a story for the nutshell for February 27th show at the Sophia.

Amy Bee challenged me to tell this particular story, and I’ve never told it before, and it is making me sad and also making me laugh, and I think it’ll be worthy.

I’ll see you on the 27th.

This is the kind of work that happens before a live show.
The rest happens in the room.

xoxo, Amy
