In a Nutshell LIVE Storytelling March: UNWRITTEN RULES
Navigating the expectations we didn’t know existed—or breaking them spectacularly.
Navigating the expectations we didn’t know existed—or breaking them spectacularly.
Hello Nutshell Friends! How’s March treating you?
Yowza, didn’t February’s show bring down the house?!
What a turnout. We were so excited to see all of you at our February show and man, were you so warm and welcoming to our featured storytellers. And what about when host Keith Lowell Jensen closed the evening with a story about his time in Ukraine? What an incredibly personal and special moment we all got to be a part of together. It was precisely why we here in the Nutshell are so determined to have a live and curated storytelling event in Sacramento.
If you’re new to the Nutshell newsletter and/or haven’t made it to a show yet, first off—Hey! Hello! Howdy! Secondly, you better get yer buns to March’s show because we’ve got some excellent tellers to share with you (see below for the lineup).
And don’t worry—if you don’t live here, we still love you and want you to be part of our community. We’ll be adding clips to our channel for everyone to peruse, and soon, we’ll add a podcast to dig deeper into our featured storyteller’s tales. We’ve also got big plans up our sleeves for some other live events, so stay tuned!
Co-creator Amy Bee has been busy working on a story she’s gonna tell at In a Nutshell on March 31. It’s a story that started as a short-form memoir and translating it into an oral story has been pretty fun and elucidating for her. Amy loves storytelling but she doesn’t like how shaky her body and voice get onstage.
Let’s show up to March’s show and show Amy some love, okay?
Co-creator Keith Lowell Jensen has been kicking butt at stand-up per usual, but deciding on a calculated whim (is that a thing?!) to tell his Ukraine story live, even though it’s still a work in progress, was like jumping from the highest diving board in the pool blindfolded. We all think it paid off, what do you think?
Let’s show up to March’s show and give Keith a high-five, shall we?
Co-creator Aaron Carnes swears up and down he’s not interested in telling a live story, but did you know he documents all things ska on a very popular podcast? He’s spent years heavily researching and then amplifying all the diverse stories that have gone into this easily misunderstood musical genre, and that’s pretty cool (even though it IS ska, and Amy no like).
Let’s show up to March’s show and see if we can stump Aaron with a ska question, all right? (Amy Bee is here to tell you it hasn’t happened yet!)
Our March show is all about “Unwritten Rules,” and the tellers will be taking that prompt in any direction they like, so expect some hilariously defiant stories with on-the-fly problem-solving skills and some truly bumpy rides.
The storytellers might show us the struggle between expectations vs reality or pull us into a world where clashing against subtext can lead to both loneliness and self-confidence . . . whatever they choose, we're ready for the ride and trust that by the end of the night, all their shared emotions, thoughts, lessons, and experiences will leave us feeling more connected, and yes, a little more human.
We're so looking forward to seeing you on March 31!
